National Marina Days joins with charitable causes

After 15 successful years, National Marina Day will become “National Marina Days: Summer of Giving.” Meanwhile, discounted registration for the MDCE is now open.

First, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Association of Marina Industries will be urging marinas to celebrate boating and give back at the same time. Across the country, marinas will host events while supporting any charity of their choice.

In 2001, the AMI initiated a national grassroots public education effort called National Marina Day. It was first held on the second Saturday of August. This was later changed to June, but still a day that marinas could focus public attention on the key role they play in their communities and in the nation’s recreation landscape.

Its success has been marked as hundreds of marinas nationwide celebrated National Marina Day by holding a wide variety of waterside events. These were as varied as the creativity of each marina and included such things as public facility tours, picnics, live music, new-boat demos, children’s events, fishing rodeos, safety demonstrations, hosting city and state political figures, booths with items for sale from other local businesses, etc.

In an excellent decision to grow the recognition of marinas even more, this year the AMI is calling on marinas to show community involvement in a new way by joining with a local charitable organization. Having a fundraising event with Marina Day can do three things: (1) Draw the charity’s supporters to the Marina Day event, thus exposing new people to the marina; (2) reflect the growing preferences (especially from millennials) that businesses be more supportive of community social needs; and (3) possibly gain good local media coverage.

As a recommendation, the AMI suggests marinas host a Marina Day “Folds of Honor” event, which is a charity dedicated to providing educational scholarships to the children and spouses of fallen and disabled service members.

MDCE registration under way

Registration for the Marine Dealer Conference & Expo, the industry’s largest annual gathering of marine retailers, is now open for this year’s Dec. 10-13 event in Orlando.

According to the Marine Retailers Association of the Americas, registering now during the month of April will get dealers and their teams a discount of $65 per person off the full conference retail registration rate. Moreover, MRAA members will be eligible to get an added $75 discount for a total savings of $140 per registrant.

The MDCE will again include four popular educational tracks (leadership, sales, marketing and service-plus), along with several pre-conference workshops, the MDCE learning lab, multiple keynoters and networking events and an expanded version of the highly touted dealer-to-dealer roundtables that debuted last year.

The 2016 MDCE set a record for dealer attendees, continuing a nearly decade-long run of growing recognition by dealers from across the country that this is the industry’s top event for all retailers. And, as I have said many times before in this blog, there isn’t a dealer of any size that won’t be better off after attending the MDCE.

The MDCE is cosponsored by the MRAA and Boating Industry magazine. Click here to register.
